If it’s January 4th, it must be Wrestle Kingdom! Night 1 of New Japan’s biggest event of the year is being held today in Tokyo Dome. We’ll have results for you in our update tomorrow.
The Night 2 card being held Tuesday will have Jay White in the main event, challenging either Tetsuya Naito or Kota Ibushi for the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental titles.
Also, the IWGP Junior Heavyweight champ Taiji Ishimori awaits the winner of the Night 1 match between Hiromu Takahashi and El Phantasmo.
Also on tap for Night 2… EVIL vs. SANADA and Shingo Takagi defending the NEVER title against Jeff Cobb.
This is a big week not only for New Japan. Other Japanese promotions are also holding major shows.
But all the events in Tokyo are under the cloud of growing COVID-19 concerns. The latest daily new case record was set there over the weekend.
Speaking early Monday, the Japanese prime minister said the government could declare a state of emergency in and around Tokyo. That would be only the second in Japan since the start of the pandemic. The first was back in spring. It lasted for just over a month.
Tokyo leaders are already asking businesses to shorten their hours. New restrictions on large-scale events in Tokyo were announced at the end of December. Those forced New Japan to halt ticket sales for Wrestle Kingdom.
Everyone attending Wrestle Kingdom this week is being asked to register for contact tracing.

Tonight is “Legends Night” on Monday Night Raw. Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair and many others are being promoted.
Also, we’ll get Drew McIntyre defending his WWE Championship against Keith Lee.
Among the new free agents in the new year - former NWA TV champ Zicky Dice. And he seems to know exactly where he wants to land.
(Zicky Dice To AEW?)
Zicky Dice speaking with Sean Ross Sapp from Fightful.com.
It looks like AEW is about to take their shows back out on the road - at least, for a little bit. Bodyslam.net’s Cassidy Haynes reports AEW will leave Daily’s Place next month and head to Miami - for tapings of Dynamite, Dark and its Revolution pay-per-view on February 27th. AEW would return to Jacksonville in March.
