Evening with Podcamp is a presentation/discussion session where we invite a panel of guest speakers to share insights and thoughts about a variety of topics. These events are community-based and are meant to facilitate conversation and education. Following the discussion led by our moderator, the floor is opened for questions and comments from the crowd.

Politics and social media have run hand in hand over the past decade or so. We saw an uptick in the acceptance of political figureheads communicating with their constituents via Twitter and Facebook during President Obama’s terms in office. With the social media surrounding the most recent presidential campaign, President Trump’s inauguration, and the various social justice campaigns arising as a result of the political landscape we wanted to sit down with a team of community specialists to talk about usage and impact of social media in politics.

Panelists for this discussion include:

Ashleigh is running for Pittsburgh City Council District 4 to replace outgoing Councilwoman Natalia Rudiak. As a staffer for Rudiak for the last six years, Ashleigh has worked on everything from potholes to vacant properties, as well as the City budget and complex policy issues. She has successfully fought for South Pittsburgh’s fair share of infrastructure improvements, like park makeovers, the reconstruction of Brookline Boulevard, and a soon-to-open Beechview Senior and Community Center. She has also worked on legislation to make government more transparent, support workers in Pittsburgh, lay the groundwork for universal Pre-K in the city, and promote gender equity.

Prior to her career as a Council staffer, Ashleigh was a campaign organizer in the non-profit world, working primarily on campaigns for clean air on the local and national levels. A native of the Pittsburgh region, Ashleigh is a 2005 graduate of Chatham University, where she focused on sustainability and environmental policy. She lives with her husband and son in Pittsburgh’s Beechview neighborhood.
Brian Crawford will be part of our panel discussion, bringing his perspective and insight to the conversation.
